Card Counting in Blackjack

Hollywood made it look like a superpower. Reality? It's arithmetic. Adding and subtracting 1 — that's literally the whole skill. Here's how it works, why casinos hate it, and what it means for online play.

The Hi-Lo System — Step by Step

Developed by Harvey Dubner in 1963 and popularized by Stanford Wong and Ed Thorp, Hi-Lo is the most widely used counting system in the world. It's also the simplest. Here's how it works.

Every card gets a tag. As cards are dealt face-up, you keep a running total. That total tells you whether the remaining shoe favors you or the house.

+1

2, 3, 4, 5, 6

Low cards. When they leave, the shoe gets richer for you.

0

7, 8, 9

Neutral. Ignore them.

−1

10, J, Q, K, A

High cards. When they leave, the shoe gets worse.

Start at zero when a fresh shoe begins. A 5 is dealt — count goes to +1. A King — back to 0. A 3 and a 6 — up to +2. A Jack — back to +1. That's it. You never go above +1 or below −1 per card.

When the running count is high and positive (+3 or more), the remaining cards are rich in 10s and Aces. That means more blackjacks, better double-down opportunities, and a higher chance the dealer busts on stiff hands. You bet bigger.

When the count is negative? The shoe favors the house. Bet the minimum and wait it out.

Running Count vs True Count

Here's where beginners trip up. A running count of +6 means something different with 1 deck remaining vs. 4 decks remaining.

Blackjack Prime uses 8 Standard Decks. To get the "true count," divide the running count by the number of decks left in the shoe.

True Count = Running Count ÷ Decks Remaining

Running count: +8 | Decks remaining: 4 → True count: +2

Running count: +8 | Decks remaining: 2 → True count: +4

Running count: +8 | Decks remaining: 1 → True count: +8

A true count of +2 or higher gives the player an edge. Each +1 in true count shifts the advantage by roughly 0.5% in the player's favor. At true count +4, you've got about a 1.5% edge over the house — which is why you'd bet 4-8x your minimum at that point.

Does It Work Online?

Short answer: no. And here's why.

Blackjack Prime — like virtually all online blackjack games — uses a Random Number Generator (RNG). The virtual shoe is reshuffled before every hand, or deep enough that counting provides zero edge. There's no card depletion to track, so the count never shifts in your favor.

Live dealer online games are different — they use real shoes and deal until the cut card. In theory, you could count. In practice, most live dealer games cut 30-50% of the shoe and use 8 decks, which crushes your expected gain to near zero after adjusting for minimum bet requirements.

So why learn this? Two reasons. First, it makes you a better blackjack player. Understanding why 10-rich decks help you explains why basic strategy works the way it does. Second, if you ever play at a physical casino — the knowledge transfers directly.

Is Card Counting Legal?

Yes. In every jurisdiction. Card counting is using your brain — it's not cheating, and no court has ever ruled it illegal. The Nevada Gaming Control Board has explicitly stated that card counting is not a crime.

That said, casinos are private businesses. They can ask you to leave, ban you, or shuffle the deck after every hand to neutralize your edge. They can't confiscate your chips, arrest you, or refuse to pay your winnings.

The famous MIT Blackjack Team made over $5 million in the 1990s counting cards at casinos worldwide. They weren't charged with any crime — but they did get banned from most Vegas properties. Using fake IDs and disguises? That's a different story.

Practice Drill — Speed Test

Want to test yourself? Grab a single deck of cards. Flip them one at a time, keeping the running count. If you do it right, you'll land on exactly 0 when you reach the end. Time yourself.

Real casino conditions? You need to count while making strategy decisions, chatting with the dealer, managing your chips, and estimating remaining decks. It's a skill that takes hundreds of hours. But the Hi-Lo tags? Those you can memorize in about 20 minutes.

Blackjack Prime — The Honest Take

At 99.62% RTP with basic strategy, Blackjack Prime already gives you some of the best odds in online gaming — no counting required. The 0.38% edge means you lose less per hour than almost any other casino game.

Learn basic strategy first. That alone gets you 95% of the way. Card counting is fascinating history and solid mental exercise — but online, your edge comes from making correct decisions, not from tracking the shoe.
